Barren Island is India's — and South Asia's — only confirmed historically active volcano. Located 138 kilometres northeast of Port Blair and roughly 140 kilometres east of Havelock Island, this remote stratovolcano rises 354 metres above sea level. But that's just the tip — the volcano stands an incredible 2,250 metres from the ocean floor, making it a truly massive underwater formation.
The island is roughly 3 kilometres in diameter with a total surface area of 8.34 square kilometres. Its core feature is a 1.6 to 2‑kilometre‑wide volcanic caldera that opens out to the west. Landing is strictly prohibited — it is an uninhabited, heavily protected wildlife sanctuary. All tours are sightseeing or diving expeditions from the boat at a safe distance.

Advanced Scuba Diving
Strictly an Advanced Open Water Diver (AOWD) site. Due to unpredictable drift currents and depth profiles, beginners are legally and safely excluded. Dive with certified operators from Havelock Dive Bases.

Strict "No Landing" Policy
Landing on Barren Island is not allowed under any circumstance. It is an uninhabited, heavily protected wildlife sanctuary. All tours are strictly sightseeing or diving from the boat at a safe distance.
Mandatory Forest Permits
Every passenger (Indian and foreign) must have a written permit issued by the Forest Department. Authorized tour operators must handle this application process at least a few days in advance.
Night Restrictions
Overnight stays anchored near the island are legally prohibited. Vessels must arrive after sunrise and depart before dusk.
Diver Prerequisites
Strictly Advanced Open Water Diver (AOWD) site. Beginners are legally and safely excluded due to swift, unpredictable open‑ocean drift currents and depth profiles of 10‑40 metres.
Best Time to Visit
November to February is the premier window. The Andaman Sea is calmest, reducing motion sickness. Operators generally pause trips from June to September due to dangerous swells and heavy rains.
